Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music Program Impact Story

At the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music, one of our goals is to serve anyone and everyone, welcoming and encouraging diversity in part by providing over 200 music scholarships to children who would not otherwise be able to afford a music education. Mia, a single mother struggling to make ends meet, was thrilled when her daughter, who had no access to music in her high school, was awarded one of the Conservatory’s scholarships last year.

Mia explains, “My daughter had lacked confidence in her own abilities for so long that it caused her to doubt herself and gave her a sense of hopelessness when it came to meeting challenges. The opportunity to [study] violin not only cultivated her musical talents but it transcended into her daily work habits and academics. She gained the confidence to know that she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to, which in turn, led her to increased determination. She started to strive to become an honor student and has continued to excel academically…Her gratitude caused her to understand and appreciate what it means to be given opportunities as well as the importance of using your skills, talents, abilities and resources in assisting others. She has become increasingly involved in both her school and neighborhood and continues to challenge herself to become a better student, mentor and community member by her continued volunteerism…Thank you…and all those who support your efforts, for the opportunity and privilege of a music education for my child”.
