The vision that shaped Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center in 1947 also shaped the Settlement House movement begun over 100 years ago. Throughout this city, neighbors stood up and took responsibility for each other, working cooperatively to build networks of services to support and empower all who lived there. The result was a groundswell of neighborhoods where people could live safely, nurture their children, and participate in their own success.
With an eye on this vision, we at Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center have for over 50 years pursued our Mission to meet the social, educational, recreational and cultural needs of the people of the Borough of Manhattan, particularly the residents of Amsterdam Houses which include 13 buildings spanning the square blocks of 61st to 64th Streets and Amsterdam to West End Avenues. We accomplish this by delivering programs and services to the over 2,800 individuals and 1,900 families – from
pre-schoolers to seniors – who live and work in this neighborhood.

Our Children’s Programs provide opportunities for our children to experience positive relationships, develop personal and social competencies and enhance feelings of self-esteem.
Early Childcare Support
Daycare and School-Age programs provide
a “home away from home” atmosphere in which children and their parents feel part of
an extended family that cares about their growth and development.
We serve parents who are working, looking for work, attending school and/or in training programs, are ill or who have a social service need for care. We also support children and families who are deemed eligible by the Agency for Child Development. We are committed to helping every child develop to his or her full potential; and many children with special needs receive on-site special services.
Daycare Program
We serve 70 children, ages two through five. We provide a complete, developmentally appropriate curriculum to
meet the needs of the whole child – emotional, social, cognitive and physical – and to prepare him or her for the transition to Kindergarten. Guiding our children are a Group Teacher who is either New York State Certified or who is working toward certification, a full-time Assistant Teacher and a part-time Teacher’s Aide. Our program is located at 243 West 64th Street.
School-Age Program
We serve 45 children, ages six through eight, during after-school hours in the school year and full-time in the summers and holidays. Throughout the school year, we escort our children from three local schools to our Center, where we provide a nutritious meal, homework assistance and access to a wide array of activities. This program is located at 206 West 64th Street.
Y.E.S. – Youth Empowered to Succeed
This after-school enrichment program opens new worlds to the children through a variety of art, music, computer, and other organized activities such as games and cultural excursions. It enhances our children’s knowledge, motivates them towards success and strengthens their identities as positive and confident people.
Y.E.S. serves 80 children, ages six to 13, and operates from 250 West 65th Street in the afternoons during the school week, and on school holidays. Just some of the program offerings are:
Fordham University, The New York Institute of Technology and Partners in Reading
Volunteer tutors offer reading, math, writing and social studies.
The LSNC/Fordham University Law Project
Fordham Law students work with third through eighth graders through a four month legal project designed to sharpen critical thinking and decision making skills. This program culminates in a Mock Court with all children participating in various roles of the judiciary system.
Mentoring USA
Fifty caring mentors take a creative approach to one-on-one after-school mentoring.
Studio in a School and Lucy Moses School of Music and Dance
These schools provide visual and performing arts experiences. Studio in a School is a community art school introducing children to museums and instructing them in painting, print making and charcoal drawing. Lucy Moses School teaches chorus, keyboard and guitar.
Parental Involvement and School Collaboration
Key to the educational success of our children is support from their parents. We work to provide all of our parents, some who may lack college education and others who may manage single parent households, with the information they need to confidently engage their children in the learning process. Our Family Literacy Workshops share strategies for learning, reading and writing, test-taking and educational games.
We also collaborate with schools to address
the specific educational and emotional needs of our children. This is particularly helpful in
supporting children who have been identified as being at risk of failure, in need of clinical testing for a learning disability, or in need of more structure or focused parental support.
Summer Camping Services
The summer is a special time for children to socialize, broaden their experiences and develop new relationships. Because our staff includes year-round employees who know the children well, we are able to create a respectful, trusting family atmosphere.
Day Camp
Our seven week camp serves 90 children, six to 13 years old, with daily
skill-building programs, plus local and out-of-city bus trips.
The Fresh Air Fund
Through this sponsorship we offer families the option of resident camping in natural woodland settings or with a host family on farms and summer homes from Maryland to New Hampshire. Children can discover how to ride a horse, sail a boat, milk a cow, or make new friendships that could last a lifetime.
Early adolescence is a time of rapid change in a young person’s development and often the last chance before adulthood to make a positive impact on his or her choices. Our high-quality youth development programs can make the critical difference in guiding young people to choose constructive lives.
The LSNC Youth Connections Teen Program
This program is dedicated to encouraging educational and social excellence among our teens. Our mandate is to enhance our youngsters’ chances of completing high school, gaining acceptance to and completing college. At the same time, we support them in building personal and social development skills. Our program includes:
The Learning Center
A core component of Youth Connections, this is a tutoring and mentoring center offering classes in math, science, English, art, drama, dance and career courses, such as catering and food services. Our staff at The Learning Center also prepares teens for Scholastic Aptitude, Regent Exams and other milestone tests.
Mentoring is just as important as academics in helping our youth succeed. Our staff team helps teens develop independent living skills, actively pursue their goals, anticipate the challenges and realities of college life, and eschew negative behavior.
The LSNC/Bard Summer Academy
This program is conducted on Bard College’s 550-acre campus in Annadale-on-Hudson, New York. The LSNC/Bard Summer Academy is an intensive 14-21 day program of language arts and environmental studies, enhanced by its superb outdoor setting, a large ecology station, a laboratory and computer facilities.
The Academy divides its studies among three academic areas: language arts, environmental science and visual arts. This supports LSNC’s interdisciplinary approach to education, which we believe stimulates students to make connections among knowledge bases and encourages analytical thinking.
LSNC teens selected for this program must prove throughout ten months of preparation that they can meet the intense educational challenges of college and develop disciplined study habits and time-management skills.
Teen Leadership Workshops
This is an education and recreation program that challenges teens to reach beyond their limits, work with others to solve problems, and experience
individual and group success. Conducted at the Ramapo Anchorage Camp in Rhinebeck, New York, this program offers our youth more opportunities for personal development.
