Net Gain New York 2003
April 9th, 2003

BasketBall City - Pier 63
at West 23rd Street in NYC
It was an exciting night for 16 teams of Wall Street sponsors and New York City high school students, as they paired up for the 6th Annual Net Gain Tournament at BasketBall City in New York on April 9, 2003. Youth, I.N.C. hosted the tournament in partnership with the New York Knicks, BasketBall City and Urban Dove to raise funds for the Net Gain program, which provides court time at BasketBall City for public high schools in New York that do not have facilities for their basketball teams.

After the cut-throat round robin competition, during which the 16 teams were coached and cheered on by Knicks players Antonio McDyess, Travis Knight, Mark Pope and Clarence Weatherspoon, the teams took a break for Youth, I.N.C. to present New York Knick Allan Houston with the H.O.O.P.S. (Helping Out Our Public Schools) Award for his commitment to youth in the New York City area.

Allan Houston then stuck around to coach “The Women” for the infamous “Battle of the Sexes” rematch. Wall Street executives, led by Ted Virtue of MidOcean Partners, Steve Schwarzman of The Blackstone Group and Rob Berner of Ripplewood Holdings took on a team of former and current female college basketball stars, led by Anucha Browne Sanders, Senior VP of Marketing and Business Operations for the Knicks. LA Laker legend Gail Goodrich returned as the coach for “The Men.”

The Knicks radio play-by-play announcer, Gus Johnson, joined the event to call the action during the game. Though the competition was close, “The Men’s” pride (and free throw shooting skills) kicked in to squeeze out a 40-38 victory, redeeming themselves after last year’s loss to “The Women.” The Knicks City Dancers provided half-time entertainment.

Following the Battle of theSexes, tournament competition ensued. Last year’s runner up - the Deutsche Bank/Beacon High School team, captained by Ken Evans – outscored the Goldman Sachs/University Neighborhood High School team, led by David Solomon, to win the 2003 Net Gain Tournament Championship - avenging their narrow loss in the championship game at the 2002 Net Gain Tournament.

This action packed night raised almost $400,000 to support Net Gain and Youth, I.N.C.’s work with non-profit organizations in New York City.
