NEW REPORT — From the Sector, For the Sector. Investing in the Workforce to Sustain and Expand Youth Services in NYC. State of the Sector Convening Recommendations from the Collaborative for Advancing Youth Development.
Hundreds of youth development professionals gathered at the CUNY Graduate Center to answer one question: how do we center the people doing this work to build a workforce that can thrive?
The field named its bright spots: joyful relationships among youth and staff, creative expression as a core practice, a shared commitment to positive youth development, and young people building their confidence, finding their voices, and stepping into leadership.
"Joy and celebration are not extras; they are evidence that the approach is working."
The field was honest about what makes this work challenging to sustain: part-time roles without benefits, staffing shortages, compliance burdens, funding instability and year-to-year contracting.
What organizations can start now: support early-career professionals and staff growth, recognize and celebrate the people doing the work, and build transparency and staff voice.
What the city can build: centralized hiring and clearance systems, career pipelines, access to education through higher education partnerships, portable credentials, and funding structures that support thriving wages and full-time careers.
"By strengthening the systems that support youth workers and nonprofit organizations, NYC can build an afterschool ecosystem that is sustainable, equitable, and capable of meeting the needs of all young people and families."
